Israel attacks the U.S.A. . . With President Lyndon Johnson’s full consent, the Israeli Air Force and their Navy torpedo boats did attack and kill Americans on 8 June 1967. This attack on the US technical research ship, the USS Liberty, was intended to draw the U.S. into the conflict of the Six-Day War between Isreal and Egypt. The combined air and sea attack did kill 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two marines, and one civilian), did wound another 171 crew members, and did severely damaged the ship.

At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25.5 nmi (29.3 mi; 47.2 km) northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish.
Jim’s Morrison’s dad, Admiral Morrison, was told by President Johnson to recall the Navy jet fighters he had dispatched to defend the USS Liberty because Johnson wanted “that ship at the bottom of the Mediterranean.” (declassified)
